What are your present research interests or distinctive viewpoint to your research?

Research in this laboratory centres on the biological roles of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in the body. Major areas of interest are the potential for H2S donors drugs to alleviate pain and inflammation and to promote a state of healthy ageing.

What do you see as your future research directions?

Molecular targets currently under investigation include the effect of H2S on inflammosome activity which is likely to be an important component of its potential beneficial effect in diseases such as arthritis and atherosclerosis. Other areas of interest include the effect of H2S on neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Numerous pharmacological and molecular biological techiques are available in collaboration with multiple interested co-workers.

Does your laboratory have a particularly strong research expertise?

Future work will likely centre on the chemical synthesis and biological evaluation of novel H2S donors again in these various disease states as well as their preclinical evaluation in terms of possible druggability.
